Shapes

This work came to be conceptually grounded by my move to south Florida and the ideas surrounding what was coined by William Letharby, in Architecture, Mysticism and Myth (2005), as the, “urban utopia.” Letharby terms the creation of the objects structured within these coordinated, aestheticized environments as “imagined facts.” Tbh Im not sure I understand what is meant by 'imagined facts', but it sounds interesting. Utopia is a weird idea, and in my mind this is a state of behavior that is just inherent in some people, and animals too...organized spaces, i.e. cleaning up just feel good. I love knowing where the scissors are when I need to cut something. So maybe this is what Letharby is saying, imagined facts, is the idea that 'organization' isnt real, the idea that human beings can create a 'utopia' is a more about perception than it is about reality...? In this sense then, this series borrows from Letharby’s ideas, These objects are 'imagined facts', where they aim to become utopias, to exist outside of the imperfection of nature. They attempt to do this mostly through smooth surfaces and and simplistic forms, materials like resin, and auto paint create industrial surfaces that speak to the pristine and immaculate in search of the utopian. Coupled with this is the use of clay, which speaks to the natural and organic. To me these two conflicting viewpoints summarize my experiences of South Florida, perspectives of utopic visions, nature, and the intersection of ‘dirty’ reality.
